Hainan is a provincial-level administrative region consisting of 19 cities and counties, with Haikou as its capital city. It is China's largest special economic zone, largest free trade pilot zone, and only free trade port with Chinese characteristics. Hainan borders Guangdong Province to the north across the Qiongzhou Strait, Vietnam across the Beibu Gulf to the west, and the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia to the east and south across the South China Sea. Geographically, Hainan sits as a “bridge” connecting the Chinese mainland and Southeast Asia.
